Lexus LF-A coupe - Spy Shots

Lexus has always positioned itself as being more about luxury than outright sportiness, but that’s about to change with the new LF-A coupe due to be launched later this year. Competing against cars such as the Audi R8 and BMW M6, the LF-A will likely be powered by a 5.0L V10 engine churning out 500hp. The LF-A will also be available in a hybrid variant, as we reported here earlier, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what effect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on the handling and weight.
Its front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution. Lexus has billed the concept LF-A as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach these limits if it’s sold unrestricted.
It’s a good sign to see the LF-A being tested at the Nurburgring and we hope the marketing execs don’t soften what could be an amazing car. BMW and Mercedes are both expected to release new super-coupes in the future so the fight among the premium car manufacturers is really hotting up. We can’t wait.

Audi A1 - New Picture

Here's another artist's impression of the upcoming Audi A1.

The Audi A1 will be designed to have a better driving experience than the Mini, which shouldn't be too complicated. Mr. Piëch has already announced that the Audi A1 will be the best car in its class.

The Audi A1 will hit the road in 2010 as a 3-door version, a 5-door Sportback will follow in 2011. Also planned is an Audi S1. Under discussion currently are a convertible and an allroad version.

Saab 9-3 Convertible Aero

The 9-3 Convertible confirms Saab’s leading position in the premium convertible segment and is the product of more than 20 years’ experience in designing four-seater, four season soft tops that are as practical as they are stylish.

The Saab Convertible has a level of structural integrity, build quality and running refinement that places it at the very top of its class. Innovative product features further develop the Saab concept that an open-top car should be ‘more than a Convertible’ by offering effective all-year-round transport. In addition to its functional qualities, the Convertible also offers strong driving appeal through sharing the excellent chassis dynamics of the 9-3 range.

The extensive engine line-up incorporates a 'tri-fuel' choice of gasoline, diesel or bioethanol (E85) powered engines. It is led by an all-aluminum 2.8-liter V6 turbocharged engine rated at 255 bhp.

Exterior Design

The impressive looks of the Saab 9-3 Convertible radiate power, sporty performance and great strength; all elegantly packaged with a Scandinavian design flair that ensures the lines are clean and flowing, but never cold or clinical.

As an indication of the success of the overall design, this is an open top car that looks like a unique model in its own right, free from any awkward styling compromises. Furthermore, the car looks just as good, top up or top down - effortlessly exchanging the looks of a sporty coupe for those more akin to a roadster.

The automatic soft-top operates entirely at the push of a single button. It incorporates three innovations and new performance standards for the class, including its speed of operation and means of deployment.

Interior Design and Features

The overall interior design reflects the curves and flowing lines of the exterior. In the same way, the fascia layout, the supportive seating, the shape of the door panels and trim, together with the feel of the tactile, soft-touch controls, are all very modern interpretations of classic Saab styling themes. It is a warm, harmonious interior, without undue ostentation, that is typically Scandinavian and could only come from Saab.

The high quality materials include the use of Hydroblox, the first water repellent seat upholstery to be fitted to a convertible. A polyester membrane lines the underside of the textile seat covering in order to prevent water penetration. This is a particularly useful feature for a convertible if the driver is caught in a shower of rain, for example, before being able to raise the soft-top.

The sporty, well-shaped front seats have been specially designed for the Convertible. They make a very visible contribution to the high quality appearance of the interior and demonstrate Saab’s excellent reputation for class-leading seating comfort. Both the seat cushion and back rest are deeply bolstered, giving good lateral and under thigh support without restricting seating comfort.

All Aluminum 2.8-liter V6 Turbo

This sophisticated 255 bhp engine is exclusive to the top-of-the-line Aero model. Maximum torque of 258 lb-ft is generated from just 1,800 rpm all the way to 5,000 rpm, with 90 per cent of this value available from an exceptionally low 1,500 rpm.

With a 60o vee-angle between its cylinder banks for perfect balance, the engine combines excellent multi-valve refinement with outstanding performance. The all aluminum construction provides a light and compact architecture, well suited to its transverse, front-wheel-drive installation in the Saab 9-3.

The twin-scroll, water-cooled Mitsubishi TDO4-15TK turbocharger, operates at 0.6 bar maximum boost with intercooling and an integral by-pass valve.

For the 2.8V6 Turbo, a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox is standard, and a six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. The automatic transmission includes ‘Saab Sentronic’, a sequential manual gearshift giving closer driver involvement. When the shift lever is moved across the gate to ‘manual’ Sentronic mode, ‘up’ and ‘down’ changes can be made with full lock-up in 3/4/5 or 6th gears. This process can be taken a step further by the option of steering wheel buttons, which bring gear-shifting right to the fingertips of the driver.

Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan Aero

The 9-3 Sport Sedan is focused on delivering a unique, ‘fun to drive’ experience that places it among the class leaders for sporty performance and excellent chassis dynamics.

The coupe-like silhouette and strong, sporty stance of the Sport Sedan help convey that ‘moving when stationary’ look. The model is positioned in the premium, mid-size segment, providing an alternative choice to natural competitors such as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class.

The extensive powertrain line-up offers a 'tri-fuel' choice of gasoline, diesel or bioethanol powered engines, led by an all-aluminum 2.8-liter V6 turbocharged engine rated at 280 bhp in combination with all-wheel- drive (Saab XWD).

Exterior Design

The distinctive looks of the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan clearly positions it as a product that could only come from Saab. The styling strategy brings together contemporary and classic Saab design themes in a progressive, modern expression of the brand’s distinctive character. The result is a bold and assertive stance for both bodystyles that reflects a strong, sporty driver appeal.

At the front, the deep, prominent evolution of the Saab grille adopts a theme first seen on the Aero X concept car. This is complemented by sweeping headlamp units that incorporate a thin ‘eyebrow’ lighting zone designed as a brand specific ‘signature’ feature. These units culminate in an upswept rear edge, introducing a Saab design theme from the 9-5 range and classic 900 model. The grille’s central wing motif is retained as a reference to Saab’s aircraft heritage.

The shaping of the side sills, rear body panels and the radius and curvature of the rear corner of the C-pillars in the Sport Sedan all play a part in helping to reduce drag. The result is an impressive drag coefficient of 0.28.

Interior Design and Features

The Saab 9-3 is designed to provide a near perfect driving position for the vast majority of drivers, almost irrespective of size, through a multi-adjustable driver’s seat and a steering wheel that adjusts for both rake and height.

The main instrument panel gently arcs round the driver, an evolution of the same theme in the previous model. In typical Saab fashion, the controls are all logically grouped, those most frequently used bring nearest to hand and closest to the driver’s natural field of vision. The short gearshift lever is just a hand span away.

The main dials - a large speedometer, with a compressed scale above 100 mph, is flanked by a smaller rev-counter and a combined fuel/water temperature/turbo boost gauge - are recessed in traditional Saab fashion. They are white on black and continue to be softly illuminated in green as Saab believes this is the most restful color choice for night driving.

The ‘Profiler’ facility, offering driver pre-sets for a wide range of functions is operated via steering wheel buttons, with on-screen prompts and selections shown in the main instrument display. Automatic climate control modes, the clock/alarm, speed scale illumination and, where fitted, the anti-theft alarm, parking assistance, rain sensitive wipers and heated seats can all be tailored in this way.

All Aluminum 2.8-liter V6 Turbo

This sophisticated engine has a 60o vee-angle between its cylinder banks for perfect balance and combines excellent multi-valve refinement with outstanding performance. Exclusive to Aero variants, it develops 280 bhp and exceptional torque of 295 lb-ft, when offered with Saab XWD. The all aluminum construction provides a light and compact architecture, well suited to its transverse installation.

Careful tuning of the Aero's twin sports exhausts downstream of the main catalyst adds a distinctive, exhilarating engine note.

With the 2.8V6 Turbo, a close-ration six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, with a six-speed automatic offered as an option. The process can be taken a step further by the option of steering wheel buttons, which bring gear shifting right to the fingertips of the driver.

BMW M2

BMW reinvented the hatchback segment with the release of their Series 2, the only model in the class to offer rear wheel drive and longitudinal engines. The German manufacturer has decided that the success shouldn’t stop here. Therefore they intend to produce two new vehicles based on their smallest model. Baptized Series 2, the compact coupe and cabriolet will produce the ultimate thrills in their M Power installments.

Following the traditional naming politics, the fresh sports cars will be called Series 2 (at BMW, sporty models usually use even numbers, ex: Series 6, Series 8). Along with the new body versions, a top model will be made available, prepared by the famous Motorsport department

To be called M2, the new hot compact will shake a little bit the GTI segment, giving shivers to the likes of the Audi S3 or Honda Civic Type-R. Several speculations have been made regarding the possible power unit of the M2. Some say it will offer a brand new four cylinder turbo. Our opinion is that, in the tradition of the M department, the engine will be a naturally aspirated straight six. This is also logical as the latest M3 uses a V8, and the excellent straight six used before is currently offered only for the Z4s M.

That power unit has been for many years the best in its class and the competition doesn’t seem to come near it any soon. Some will argue that is a big engine for the Series 1, but the 130si, already offers a 3.0 l straight six. The additional space required is usually offered by the “power dome” featured on the M Models hood.

The official launch of the M2 is not expected before 2010, and the price tag for the US market is rumored to be set around $ 35,000.
